FedEx has unveiled its 2027 rate schedule, and the figure shown is 5.9, % on average<\/strong>, effective as of January 4, 2027<\/strong>. For a Canadian small or medium-sized business, this percentage is misleading: it is a weighted average, and very few shippers will pay exactly 5.9 TP3T more.<\/p>\n

The actual increase consists of three components: the base rate, additional surcharges, and the reclassification of zones. When added together, these push the cost for several shipping profiles well beyond the announced figure.<\/p>\n

Here's what's actually changing, where the biggest increases are, and how to prepare your shipping budget before January.<\/p>\n

FedEx Rate Hike in 2027: 5.9 % Is Just an Average<\/h2>\n

The first layer is the base rate grid. It varies widely depending on the service and distance. Ground services\u2014which are used most frequently by Canadian small and medium-sized businesses\u2014are subject to higher rates than even the slowest express services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

By weight range, the discrepancy is even more noticeable: packages weighing 1 to 5 lb increase from 6.2 % to 6.7 %, those weighing 6 to 10 lbs from 6.7 %, while the 21- to 50-lb range is limited to 5.3 %\u20135.7 %. At the other end of the spectrum, a 150-lb shipment takes about 7.2 %.<\/p>\n

Practical Translation<\/em> : If your volume consists mainly of small packages shipped long distances, your actual increase will be over 6 %, not 5.9 %. If you ship a lot of medium-sized packages over short distances, you'll fare better.<\/p>\n

Second layer: the overlays rise faster than the grid<\/h2>\n

That's where the bill goes off the rails. Of the approximately 158 surcharge lines analyzed by specialized firms, 95 increased by more than 5.9 %<\/strong>, and the median increase in surcharges is around 6.25 %. Several items are well above 9 %.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Two new fees also appear on the January 18, 2027<\/strong> : 25 $<\/strong> for non-electronic business documents and 5 $<\/strong> for a handwritten air waybill. For an SME that still prints its commercial invoices and customs documents on paper, that\u2019s an additional 30 $ per cross-border shipment\u2014a cost that can be entirely avoided by switching to electronic documents.<\/p>\n

The amounts listed above are for reference only. They vary depending on the specific service, the pricing schedule version, and, most importantly, your negotiated agreement: an agreement may cap certain surcharges or, conversely, allow them to follow the public pricing schedule in full.<\/p>\n

Third layer: the reclassification of zones<\/h2>\n

The least noticeable tier is also the most expensive for some shippers. FedEx isn't just changing prices\u2014it's changing the zones to which certain ZIP codes are assigned. The rate on the price list may remain the same, but the package is billed at a higher-priced zone.<\/p>\n
